boiler #16: Mike Gao

July. 30 degrees. Cold beer. Ladies in bikinis. Ice cream. Summer in the city! Nontheless it’s been a while. Time for some boiler action! We are pleased to announce the guest of our 16th session on the 22nd of July: Mike Gao from Los Angeles, California!

Mike has been in the beat scene since the early beginning. Having won his first beat battles in 2005 he went on from there and released music on labels such as Alpha Pup and All City Records. There is also a forthcoming release on Berlin based label Project Mooncircle this summer. Mike was also one of the first to perform at the famous Low End Theory Club in Los Angeles next to artists such as Flying Lotus, Exile and Nosaj Thing. In addition to his solo projects he also enjoys working with MCs such as Luckyiam, Mestizo and Qwel by producing them, providing beats or supporting them on tour. Mike is also a huge music technology geek. An iPhone App for automatic beatbox detection is just one of the many interesting and forward thinking creations he has provided. Pursuing his PhD Computer Music at the University of California in San Diego he will also hold a talk at the International Computer Music Conference in Huddersfield this year.

Nontheless a boiler night is about music in the first place. So to give you a glimpse on what you can expect on this session, please check Mike’s latest release “Sun Shadows” right below. It has been released on Alpha Pup Records.

In addition to this special live performance we’ll also have the boiler crew in full effect again. Support will be provided by Jay Scarlett, Larkin And The Sky, Trrbo, tom2k and SLOMOO. This boiler session will take place at Import/Export, Goethestr. 30. Doors 23:00, 7€. Looking forward to see y’all bounce!

More Fulgeance Live Footage

David just put up parts of the footage we took the other thursday at Fulgeance’ show. Awesome! The video shows a live performance of one of his new tracks called “Hiver Nomand”. The piece will soon be released via Alpha Pup, so stay tuned!

boiler #13: Fulgeance (feat. GLITCH HAPPENS)

Wut wut! April 2011, boiler in full effect! A lot has happened since we first started off with our little “Boiler Room Bar” at the Thalkirchner Str. in October. Shortly after police and neighbours shut us down there we found a new home right around the corner at the Blumenbar, and since then we’ve had eleven (#12 in the pipeline!) great nights packed with exciting music and artists, vibing people and especially – some really good times. Coming month will be another big step for us as we will move to the Crux Club for our booking sessions. So this is the time to say

Thanks Blumenbar, Hello Crux!

New location, same idea though! Cutting edge artists (most of them with first ever appearances in Munich) in a convenient and open-minded environment, supported by a group of heads that just love what they’re doing. To further complete our nights we’ve teamed up with the Glitch Happens collective from Augsburg as in HKS51, cLOUD and John et Paul on the visual side. They have been pushing the movement for more than two years now gaining wordwide recognition and respect and will surely add some extra Amazing to the city of Munich. Cheers guys!

To celebrate this step in a decent way we thought we’d get someone really special into town. Someone you’ve heard over and over at our session, someone who’s known for fuckin tearin’ it down. Ladies and gentlemen, we present you: Fulgeance!

With releases on All City Records, Alpha Pup, One Handed Music and of course his own imprint, Musique Large, this man surely has left an influental trace on the beat scene. Known for his very own “Low Club Style”, meaning the creation of a clubby atmosphere via downtempo beats, he got worldwide recognition by the likes of Gilles Petterson and Mary Anne Hobbs.

Fuelled by Soul/Funk & Disco, the electro-injected sound of Detroit’s Hip-Hop heads, andexperimental electronics fom the early analog synthesizer era (Moggi, Moroder, Bernard Fevre), Fulgeance delivers his own vision of club funk and future beats. Hyperactive by nature, his productions (as Fulgeance, Peter Digital Orchestra or Souleance) have served as a showcase for his MPC skills and rich musical heritage, establishing him as a rising figure in the French beat producer scene with growingworldwide recognition. Live on stage, Fulgeance exposes his full potential as a musician and showman, moving crowds from Tokyo to Vilnius, by way of Los Angeles, Londres, Detroit, Athenes or Tel Aviv with an explosive live set, dynamically beefed up for the club.

So on the 7th of April you know what to do: get nuuuuts! There will be full boiler x Glitch Happens support that night as in:

  • Jay Scarlett
  • HKS 51
  • tom2k
  • Bartellow
  • John et Paul (Visuals)

Doors will be open from 10pm. The Crux is situated right at the Marienplatz, Ledererstr. 3. Please also note that this will be the only boiler night in April as the 3rd Thursday is a “TANZVERBOT” evening throughout the whole city. So you better be there for your monthly boiler injection. Looking forward to see you at Crux!

boiler #12: Take

Spring is arriving in the city of Munich, and so is our second booking from sunny Los Angeles, California. On the 30th of March we present to you: Take of Alpha Pup Records!

A multi-instrumentalist and frequency fanatic with ten years of releases and live performance experience, Take’s formula is ever evolving and his productions clearly sprinkled with his unique sonic vocabulary. Constantly growing, Take uses engaging melodies, non-linear development and a multi-strata slump to communicate a fresh feeling of movement in every track. Embracing his geographic legacy in the thriving LA experimental beat community but still very much his own player, Take makes music that charts its own course through a gurgling fuzz of rich layers and textures. His sound has always been about pushing forward, breaking ground and laying a new path for producers to walk.

Yep Yep! Just in 2010 Take released “Only Mountain” on highly acclaimed label Alpha Pup Records, which caught attention in newspapers, magazines and blogs all over the scene and beyond. This was followed by “Only Mountain Remixes” last february, surely featuring a mad selection of artists with names such as Dibiase, Falty DL and Free The Robots in action. There was also a release on All City Records from Dublin earler in 2010 as a part of their LA Series in cooperation with Matthew David (Leaving RecordsDublab). As you can see, this man is a busy man and we’re happy to finally get him to play a show here in Monaco di Bavaria.

Take will play a liveset at the Blumenbar on Wednesday the 30th of March. If you want some more sonic preview on this, please check out the boiler mix he did for us here or directly to your right on the sidebar.

Please also note that this will be our last live session at the Blumenbar as we will move to the Crux Club for our booking nights from April. More info on this soon though.
